In today’s fast developing technology growing industrialization and modernization, Life Sciences hold a prominent place as few professions do. Life sciences are and will continue to remain one of the prospective professions.
Life Science is the study of living things. The life sciences comprise all fields of science that involve the scientific study of living organisms, like plants, animals, and human beings. While biology and medicine remain centerpieces of the life sciences, technological advances in the field of biological sciences have led to a burgeoning of specializations and new, often interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary fields.
Department of Life Science is a multidisciplinary academic and research section that aims to uplift the life of people through modern scientific research and extension activities. It encompasses major domains of biosocial sciences such as Enzymology, Immunology, Molecular biology, Drug discovery, Healthcare, clinical Research Microbiology and Biotechnology,
Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science which encompasses areas viz. Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Virology, Plant and Animal tissue culture, Chemistry and Engineering. It is a fast emerging “cutting edge” science with distinctive advantages as it finds applications in practically all aspects of life. The subject offers exciting opportunities in various fields from basic research to an industry-oriented career.
Keeping in view outlay and applications of biotechnology in every field to accomplish the eternal demand for resource personnel with specialization in biotechnology, the college started the Biotechnology course in 2002.
Microbiology is study of microorganisms and is one of the significant branches of sciences to understand the principles of life which has roots in the study of various microbial systems. Though it is a basic science, it is multidisciplinary as well. Its various branches such as Medical Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Virology, Air, Water, Soil, Agriculture, Food, Dairy, Space Microbiology, Fermentation Technology etc. has never ending impact on human life and making earth a better place to live.
Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) is a branch of science that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases using clinical laboratory tests. This involves analysis of the body fluids, including tissues and blood. Medical Laboratory Technologists perform most of their tasks such as the preparation of slides human tissues or other specimens, using laboratory equipment. They also carry out tasks such as blood tests and blood typing. While studying this course, candidates are taught about diseases and the use of medical laboratory equipment in performing clinical tests. An MLT is a crucial part of the healthcare system, they play a crucial role in the diagnosis of a disease by collecting the information required to provide suitable medical facilities to the patient. Without an MLT, modern medicine would be incapable of providing the right treatment.
The term “clinical research” refers to the entire bibliography of a drug/device/biologic. Clinical research is a branch of science that determines the safety and effectiveness (efficacy) of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use. These may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for relieving symptoms of a disease. Clinical research is different from clinical practice.
The Department of Life Sciences offers both B.Sc., B. Voc and M.Sc. programs, five major ongoing programs: B.Sc. Biotechnology, B. Voc Medical Lab Technology, M. Sc in Microbiology, Biotechnology & Clinical Research.
The programme will provide graduates with the expertise and experience to effectively contribute the technical development of the Life sciences related industries like Pharmaceutical industries, Agricultural, Fermentation Industry, diagnostic, healthcare Institutes/Laboratories and basic and applied research laboratories.
Biotechnology is a broad term that covers the practical use of biological systems to produce goods andvices. It encompasses the transformation of materials by micro-organisms (eg. fermentation), methods of propagation, such as plant cloning or grafting, and may involve genetic alteration through methods such as selective breeding. Biotechnology is the use of microbes, or life processes, to produce materials and products that are useful to mankind.
That is to say, any technique that uses living organisms, or parts of organisms, to make or modify products, improve plants or animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific uses can be defined as biotech. The term was coined around 1915 but Biotechnology, in one form or another, has been around since prehistoric times. Centuries ago people discovered, quite by accident, how to make use of biological processes that naturally occur within living cells. While they might not have understood the processes, they did observe the results. They discovered, for example, that microbes like bacteria and moulds produced beer, wine and vinegar when grown in vats. Through trial and error, they learned to use these processes to solve problems and produce materials that were useful to mankind.
The College provides excellent and relevant teaching and research over a wide range of scientific disciplines, from Biotechnology and computer sciences to library and media sciences; it also provides a major input to postgraduate courses in Biotechnology, computer science and library science. Graduates from this College will be in a position to make a major contribution to the future wellbeing of Irish knowledge based industry as well as to many other areas of activity, from health-related disciplines to Agricultural enterprises. Of the four major departments of the college the department of Biotechnology is being looked after by total ten young and enthusiastic faculty members belonging from various different disciplines of life sciences with the ongoing research experience. The department has six (4 UG and 2 PG) well equipped laboratories provided with the advanced instruments like PCR, Gel Documentation system, Spectrophotometer, Semi Automatic DNA Sequencing Facility, Deep Freezer, Blotting System, Semi Automatic Fermentor etc. along with one plant tissue culture laboratory with state of the art facilities which are unique in the near by locality. The programme will provide graduates with the expertise and experience to effectively contribute the technical development of the life sciences related industries like Pharmaceutical industries, Fermentation Industry, Animal and Plant sciences related research, Research Laboratories in Biotechnology etc. Dr. D.S.Gond
