The Department of Library and Information Science, Swami Vivekanand Mahavidyalaya, Udgir was established in 2004 to provide professional education and training in the discipline of Library and Information Science to include the modern techniques of Documentation and Information studies. The Department offers Bachelor’s Degree programme (BLISc) and Master’s Degree programme (MLISc), each course which is of one-year duration with two semesters.

There is a great demand for the library and information professionals in the job market. Those who earn these degrees get placed as Librarians, Information Scientists, Knowledge Managers, Technical Editors, Consultants, Content Managers, etc. Those who qualify UGC- NET or SET examination can enter academics as Assistant Professor or Assistant Librarian of a University or College Librarian. Those who qualify UGC-JRF can also pursue research in the field of Library & Information Science with UGC fellowship.

Library and information professionals are needed not only to gather, organize and coordinate access and use of the best and rich available information resources but also to package, repackage and market them to ensure their effective access and utilization by the target audience. The application of ICTs, particularly the computers, Internet, Intranet and other network technologies have continued to impact positively on the methodologies of library and information service delivery, education and training of information service providers as well as the information needs and seeking behaviors of the information seekers. This leads to a shift of paradigm of the library and information profession, education, training, and services from the traditional type of librarianship to the modern/hybrid type of librarianship characterized by client-oriented professionalism.

The Department has made substantial contribution in the field of Library & Information Science by producing eminent professionals who are occupying key positions in various departments and organizations

The students are prepared with professional competencies having opportunities in wide spectrum of jobs in libraries, archives, publishing firms, the corporate sector, and firms associated with information products and services. The Department makes constant efforts for suitable job placements of students

Salient Features of the Department

  • our college library is maintained in such a way to attract students for their intellectual upliftment & stimulate creative thinking.
  • There is separate & ventilated library building.
  • Our library has collection of around 10000 books
  • We subscribes 60 journals & Magazines published in different research fields.
  • Also library have reference books like Who’s who, genius, world record, Road atlas, encyclopedia’s, like Britannica, Marathi vishwakosh, Bhartiya Sankrutikosh & other sub-wise encyclopedia. Dictionaries likes Chambers, Webster’s, Oxford.
  • The newspapers:- Marathi, Hindi, English makes available to staff & students. The whole collection of library is available on the circulation desk.
  • Services provided by library: Reference service, referral service, information service, newspaper clipping service, etc., facilities like home lending, night library reading etc.

Department of Library & Information Science

Library, now known as knowledge resource centre plays a key role as the soul of the body in Higher Education system. With the rapid advancement in ICT, libraries also have gone through tremendous changes. Thus, in the fast changing environment focusing on diversified demands of users, their expectations, help in retrieving information need of trained and skilled staff with enough knowledge of ICT, database browsing-downloads and uploads, navigation, consortia’s, websites, repackaging of information, organization, indexing have became prime requirement to be eligible to work in academic libraries. Thus, institutes of higher education such as colleges and universities have revised and incorporated new concepts and subjects in the curriculum to empower the upcoming generation with this relevant knowledge. Thus taking into consideration the vital role of library staff in discharging services the SVM college has instituted one year Bachelor of Library & Information Science B.Lib.& Inf Sci. in 2002. 38 students were admitted in the first year. Then after strengths of students were increased in respective years. The college received permanent affiliation from the SRTM U Nanded in 2005. So far, over 900 plus students have completed their B.Lib.& Inf Sci. from SVM Udgir.

Looking at the increasing demand of the students and the society, the college also started Master of Library and Information Science M.LIB & I.Sci in 2003.

Initially, the Department of Library and Information Science was established under the faculty of Humanity and Social Sciences. The Board of Studies in Library & Information Science was constituted. Further in the new Maharashtra Public University Act 2016 the department came under the faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies.

In order to develop the overall personality of the students the department organizes several co-curriculum and extracurricular activities. Students are encouraged to participate in seminars, conferences and workshops for academic enrichment. Faculty takes mentorship of students to ensure their overall improvement and perfection in the profession.

Most of its alumni have stayed in the profession and serving as the librarians and teachers and some have occupied higher position in other fields.

As we know, now a days in every field from educational to the private companies, their as a constant need of libraries and a lot of job potential is required.So by keeping this in mind our college is running two courses under the library department i.e. the B.Lib. Sd.Sti. and the M.Lib, & LSci.

After completing the master’s degree the students are having lot of opportunities in the fields such as Academic Libraries, Special Libraries, Public Libraries etc. apart from these fields they will also get a job as a information officer at district level, as a Assistant Director and Library inspector recurted by MPSC. Under this department, our college is running the following courses at UG & PG level.
